PROVO, Utah (AP) – Historians are springing into action after finding that Provo’s oldest house is set to be demolished for a church parking lot expansion.

The Daily Herald reports The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints wasn’t aware that the house at 677 West 200 South in Provo was built in 1853, and has pushed the demolition date back from October until June.

The church offered $10,000 toward moving the building, if that’s possible.

The house was built in 1853 by Bishop James Loveless and has been occupied until the church purchased it and two neighboring homes last year.

The house is now stuccoed and modernized so most weren’t aware of the adobe mud brick structure beneath.

A moving company estimated it would cost $45,000 to relocate the fragile building, and that might not be successful.
