Originally constructed in 1893 as simple vernacular form, this house received Arts and Crafts-style alterations c. 1921. The house went through many owners who never lived here, including Alonzo Morrison, founder of Morrison-Merrill Co., and elected to the first state legislature. The first owner occupant was Arthur O. Gates, who acquired the house c. 1935. Gates, formerly a professor at Purdue University, was a prominent engineer and Utah industrialist who owned Acme Engineering and Utility Engineers, Inc. After Gates passed away in 1957, his second wife, Wanda, continued to live here.
