John Mathis drew lot 8, block 6, plat A (300 West 200 South) to build his home in 1862. Wallance Brigham, Mathis’ eldest son, inherited the home in 1900. Prior to his death, W.B. was a prominent man in St. George. Not only was he a rancher on the Arizona Strip, he was one of the youngest men to assist in the founding of the Bank of St. George, where he served as both bank director (1908) and president (1937-1955). W.B. also served two terns as a St. George City Councilman, president of the chamber of commerce, and was elected to the Utah State Legislature (1936).
