SAAE thanks the members of the School Board of the Salt Lake School District and Kay Peterson, the principal of East High School: for their cooperation and Support. Most importantly, SAAE expresses gratitude to the more than 1,200 donors from 41 U.S. States and several foreign countries for this project. Because of your generous support, this Gathering Place is memorialized. This project expresses the appreciation of these donors for the relationships and memories created at this institution. DESIGN CONCEPT
On this site, the original East High School was built. The initial name was Salt Lake High School East. Construction was begun in the spring of 1912. Designed by Eldredge & Chesebro, Architects, the much admired four story structure was occupied by generations of students. The building was built of unreinforced masonry bearing walls which unfortunately did not conform to newer building codes. In 1993, the Salt Lake City School Board decided to replace the original structure with a new building which would comply with seismic requirements and current educational programming. The historic building was demolished in the late summer of 1996.
The drawing reproduced in granite is taken from the original architectural drawing dated April 2, 1912. It shows the building’s east elevation as it was designed. Some modifications were made to the completed structure including elimination of the terra cotta decorative features shown on the architectural drawing.
The platform upon which this monument is placed is located in the exact location of the original stairs which lead to the main entrance. The decorative light fixtures (not the originals but later replacements) are placed in their original locations. The narrow concrete strips placed in the grass mark the original location of the east elevation of the historic structure.

This monument to Salt Lake High School East is located in front of East High School at 840 South 1300 East in Salt Lake City, Utah.
