The building was built by Thomas Henry Heal who had built a number of buildings in Provo by mid century.

Heal purchased the piece of property from Phoebe Taylor (widow of George) and built the building for Sears Roebuck and Co. In the process he managed to get Provo City to pipe the mill race which ran down Second West and over the street.

Heal was an aggressive and prominent builder in Provo – his real estate company survives him.

The three-story building has been altered with enameled metal plates to eliminate the second story windows.

The building has also been painted which makes the ornamental piece at the top (a relief of a women flinging off from a globe) less noticeable.

A single-story addition was made at the rear in 1953.
