The Placer Inn
1405-1419 Miner Street

The two-story portion of this building was built in 1898. The corner plot on the west was a small city park, complete with a Victorian band stand. In the 1930’s the two-story building housed the local bus depot, and in 1929, the bandstand was moved to make way for an addition the Placer Inn. The Placer Inn was built by the Rocky Mountain Tours Company so that their bus passengers could Their have a refined place to eat lunch. dreams were fulfilled; the restaurant’s food, service and elegance were legendary along the Front Range. Guests from all over came to enjoy good meals eaten on tables set with sterling silver flatware and fancy linens.

In the 1950’s, the Placer Inn became a bowling alley. The building lost much of its elegance as the paned windows were covered up for over 30 years. However, in 1994 the building was restored to its historic state and converted to the Tommyknocker Brewery and Pub.

The Erickson Building

Edward Erickson commenced construction of this building in 1879, finishing the exterior in 1880. Two fires in the central business district of Idaho Springs in 1878 damaged many commercial businesses and soon convinced owners their investment would be better secured in brick buildings– Mr. Erickson was no exception. His new business house was designed to be fireproof. The building housed a variety of businesses through the years. Erickson maintained the building until 1916 when he sold it to Simon Weinberger for use as a saloon. The saloon sported the city’s first electric sign. uses, included a meat market and the “GEM” movie theatre. The ERICKSON BUILDING was renovated along with it’s neighbor Big Pink in the early 1980s.
