This is actually the first white “B” for the original Basic High School campus that was located on Van Wagenen Street. It was painted into the rocks of the hills at the base of the colloquial “Black Mountain” (with TV and radio antennae atop its peak) running adjacent to the I-11 and Horizon Ridge. That campus is now Burkholder Academy of Sciences (formerly Middle School), with only BHS’s original gymnasium still standing following a mid 2000s renovation to the property. Suburbia eventually cropped up on the original letter and limited access to alumni wishing to attempt any upkeep, hence its faded appearance and false resemblance to a “D”.
