Hires Drive-In, founded in 1959 by Don Hale, is a Salt Lake staple located just a few blocks west of the University of Utah. Hale, who had worked in his family’s grocery store growing up, was no stranger to the food industry and began building a cinder-block building that still stands today at 425 South 700 East. Next door to the restaurant is another of Hale’s business ventures – Litza’s Pizza. The restaurant’s signature burger, The Big H, is known for its distinct pink sauce, a Hale family recipe that is available on many of their menu items and even sold at retail in some stores. – Preservation Utah
