The story of Wangsgard’s Market
In 1919, a couple named Pete & Mary Wangsgaard founded this grocery store on the southeast corner of 2nd Street (opposite side of the street of the present location). Pete and his wife Mary ran the family business for a number of years before turning the family business over to their sons Owen and Spence. Owen and Spence kept the family business until the mid 1960’s when 3 gentlemen bought the store from them. Dee Hutzley, Cal Chandler & Russ Smuin owned and operated the business together for over 20 years. In the 1980’s, Mr. Hutzley took sole ownership of Wangsgard’s Market until the summer of 2002.
Phillip Child, current owner of Wangsgard’s Market started his career as a bag boy for the store at the age of 16. He worked as a stocker, dairy clerk, frozen food manager, front-end supervisor & store manager for 24 years before buying the store from mentor & friend Dee Hutzley. Phillip is still very involved in the store operations; his favorite things to do are checking out groceries and mingling with the many customers. If he isn’t in a checkstand, you will find him stocking shelves on any of the store’s aisles.
Phillip’s family consists of his wife of 30 years Debbie and 3 sons Mike, Jason & Matthew. He also has 3 granddaughters.
