The “Alley Shop”
This is a two-story wood frame building, constructed in the commercial vernacular style circa 1874. Built by the owners of the adjacent lot to the south (1640 Miner Street) the two pieces of property have been jointly owned since. It contained multiple trades throughout the years. Near the turn of the century, it housed a restaurant, shoe shop, grocery store and private dwelling. In the 1920’s, Mr. Roscoe’s successful blacksmith shop relocated here from across the street. However, due to the Depression or the trade becoming obsolete, within a few years the building again turned over from trade to trade. Other businesses located here were an auto sales and service shop and a funeral parlor.
