John M. Bernhisel
June 23, 1799 – September 28, 1881
Pioneer – Statesman – Physician

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in 1827, Dr. Bernhisel joined the L.D.S. Church while practicing medicine in New York City. In 1843 he became Joseph Smith’s attaché, and after the Prophet’s death he remained in Nauvoo until the fall of 1847 as a trustee for the church. A pioneer of 1848, Dr. Bernhisel became Deseret’s agent to Washington in 1849, and Utah’s first delegate to congress in 1851, serving for five terms, 1851 to 1859, and 1861 to 1863.

He was a studious, cultivated man who never waivered from his conviction.
