Leon’s Market Building

Originally built as a two story four course wide brick structure by Soren L Petersen circa 1893. The second story was removed in 1964 because of structural concerns.

Building was owned and operated as a general store, complete with groceries, hardware, dry goods, animal feed, gas, kerosene and more by Petersen and later Ed Jespersen as “Jespersen’s Mercantile.” Purchased in 1950 by Leon J Sorensen and continued as “Leon’s Market” through 2001.

Served as the main train stop in Huntsville during early 1900’s and survived a devastating fire in about 1958.

The Sorensen family leased the building as a meeting house for a community church from 2001 through 2016. Restored by Richard L Sorensen family and currently in use as Huntsville Mercantile Events Center and Inn.
