704 5th Avenue, owneed by Jennifer and Michael Hughes since Aug 1999. a conttributing structure to the Avenues Historic District. Addreess was originally on K Street as front door faced west and was a one room cabin. Owned by Emilee Woodmansee and held as a rental income property. This house contributes to the Avenues historic district because its Victorian eclectic style is compabable with other houses in this area, built in the late 19th century. This house incorporates a pre 1898 frame structure probably built and used as rental by Emily Woodmansee (309 5th) who owned this property from _1889 until 1896.
Emily Woodmansee was a well-known Utah poet, and according to the Deseret News, was a “writer of much ability, both . in poetry and in prose.” She was widely puolished in Utah and the United States.
In 1896 Benjamin G. Raybould and A.G. Sutherland, Jr., real estate agents,
bought this house. Neither one of these men lived here. An 1897 building permit shows that they hired W.B. Wright to build a frame addition, costing $75.00. In 1898 Charles P. Ringwood began living here. Ringwood was a veteran of the Indian Wars in Utah, and was one of Salt Lake City’s first policeman. He served on the police force from the late 1840’s until 1890. He became a member of the Mormon Church in 1850, and later became a high priest. He was married to Caroline Robbins Ringwood, and
was the father of twenty-two children. Mrs. Ringwood was a native of England, coming to Utah as a Mormon convert in 1859, at the age of nine. She was the daughter of James and Caroline Goldring Robbins. She was married to Charles Ringwood, June 14,1869. Mr. Ringwood died at this house in 1914. Mrs. Ringwood died the following year. They were
survived by nine children. The Ringwood family owned this house until 1922. The next owners and residents were James C. and Jelen Gain, who lived here in 1925. Alfred J. Crooks was the resident and owner from 1928 to 1935. The subsequent owners were Arthur Miller (1935) and W. Charles Spencer (1943) . In 1955 Mary L. Vass purchased the property. The legal description is COM AT NW COR LOT 3. BLK 59. PLAT 0. SLC SUR; S 75 FT; E 5 RODS; N 75 FT; W 5 RODS TO POINT OF BEG, 0.14 ACRES MORE OR LESS.
