William J. Silver, 1832-1918
Born in London, England and educated as a mechanical engineer, William J. Silver came to Salt Lake City in 1859 where he performed work on many mills and mines in the Salt Lake area. In 1865 Mr. Silver purchased a lot for his home and shop at the corner of Center and Peach Streets (now 500 North). Here he established a small iron works company which was the fore- runner of the Silver Brothers Iron Works. In 1868 Mr. Silver built the first steam engine in Utah and installed it in a boat on the Great Salt Lake. He also fabricated the gates and iron fencing sur- rounding the Brigham Young Cemetery. Mr. Silver lived at 512 Center Street.
