339 Third Avenue and 157 North D Street in The Avenues in Salt Lake City, Utah

mentioned here:
While they account for less than one percent of all residences, the very large, often architect-designed homes in the Eastlake, Queen Anne and Shingle styles, and later the Prairie and Craftsman styles greatly influence the visual character of the Avenues. Some of the state’s best examples of residential architectural styles were built there, including the William Barton house, 231 B Street, (vernacular/Gothic); the Jeremiah Beattie house, 30 J Street, (Eastlake); the David Murdock house, 73 G Street, (Queen Anne); the E.G. Coffin house, 1037 First Avenue, (Queen Anne); the N.H. Beeman house, 1007 First Avenue, (Shingle style); the Vto. Mclntyre house, 257 Seventh Avenue, (Classical Revival); the James Sharp house, 157 D Street, (Craftsman); and the W.E. Ware house, 1184 First Avenue, (Colonial Revival).

Mining Exchange Building
J. J. Elliott had his assay office in the building which was built in 1879. Often during the boom days of the 1880’s dozens of ore wagons were parked on Miner Street in front of the “Exchange”. Elliott promoted himself in the city directories of the period as “an assayer and bullion buyer”. He was also president and manager of the Idaho Springs Electric Company and had the difficult job of convincing the citizens of Idaho Springs that electricity wasn’t just a passing fad and that it was safe.

The Mead and Cooper Building
Built in 1881, this building housed M. C. Livingstone’s jewelry and sewing machine store during the early ’80’s. Since Livingstone had some of the first commercial sewing machines in the district, he made a brisk living repairing the canvas awnings which fronted many of the buildings on Miner Street. P. I. Thorsen and A. Nelson opened a store at this site in 1894, where they sold “dry goods, clothing, boots, shoes, hats, caps, gent’s furnishings, notions, carpets, oil cloths, etc etc”, according to the newspaper ads of the period. The two merchants were so successful they soon opened additional stores in Lawson, Silver Plume and Georgetown.

206 I Street
Built in 1899, this 1-1/2 story Victorian Eclectic style house, along with a couple other houses on the street, were built by Edgar W. Bruce for the Deseret Savings and Loan Company for investment purposes. Deseret S & L owned the building until 1932, when it was then sold to James J. Bunsey, a clerk at the American Smelting and Refining Company. Bunsey owned the home for several years. The style, materials, and massing of the home add to the architectural character of the Avenues Historic District.
