2550 Van Buren Avenue

This one-story, brick, cross-wing type house was originally constructed c. 1887, likely by William and Elizabeth Kingsford, two early, prominent pioneers of Ogden City. An addition to the home was built c. 1890. The Kingsfords were some of the first people of Ogden to make the “bench” area of the city home. They helped improve the city, particularly this area, by building roads, canals, farming, grading land, and constructing homes such as this residence. This type of house, the cross-wing, was a Medieval English form that was resurrected by authors of nineteenth-century American architecture style books. The cross-wing home represented a departure from the older classical style tradition. In the years after 1880, the cross-wing replaced the hall-parlor as the most common Utah house type. This house, along with its historic barn outbuilding, retains its historic and architectural integrity and is a contributing building within the Eccles Avenue Historic District.
