By 1891 when Kletting designed this home for William and Chloe Bateman, the various Victorian styles were well established as most fashionable. Although the Bateman home incorporates typical Victorian flair associated with the Queen Anne style – particularly wit hits dome-shaped turret and ornate gable embellished with fish-scale shingles and a “Palladian” window – its overall relatively simple character and shingle siding on the second story are more closely associated with the Shingle Style, which may have developed in reaction to the highly elaborate qualities of Queen Anne.
