573 3rd Avenue
This one-story home was built of adobe and brick in the Victorian Eclectic style circa 1884. A two room brick addition on the west was built in 1893. A brick addition on the north was built prior to 1911, and another brick addition on the north was completed in 2020.
The architectural elements consistent with a Victorian Eclectic style include an ornate stained glass window in the upper sash at the columned, asymmetrical entry porch, transom windows above exterior and interior doors, and tall and narrow double-hung windows.
James Orson Ellerbeck, a blacksmith, and his wife Clara Brown Ellerbeck were the original owners of the house. James was proprietor of the Bay Horse Shoeing Shop located downtown at 65 Plum Alley.

John J. Stewart House
This home was constructed in 1891 by the firm of Frank E. McGurrin and Elmer Darling. McGurrin and Darling built many of the houses in this area of the Avenues. The first resident was John J. Stewart, a traveling salesman and later a lumber wholesaler. Mr. Stewart owned the home until his death in 1930, when it was sold to Alfred H. Carter, a local gardener. Mr. Carter owned the home for 20 years, then sold it to Mrs. Clydie Y. Murdock. Architecturally, the two-story, wood-clad home features Victorian Eclectic and Queen Anne style influences. Prominent details include its square tower adorned with wood panels, large gabled front bay, flared gabled entrance, projecting support brackets, and decorative shingle siding.

The Hutchinson Building
Hutchinson’s Brick Block was built by Ira Hutchinson in 1881. The second story bay windows, both front and back, are original, and are the only ones in the downtown historic district. It was originally used by a Mr. Walker as a bakery and confectionary store.
In 1882 ownership was passed to Mary McKinley, then in 1902 to E. R. Wilkins whose son Ralph was the first Idaho Springs citizen killed in World War I. Title then went to Jennie Wilkins in 1908.
During the 1920’s thru the 1960’s the building hosted a variety of activities from saloon, to American Legion and V.F.W. post, to income tax preparation.
The building that began as a confectionary store retained its sweet tooth and has been Dr. Robert Hickam’s dental office since 1971.
