This 1903 house pattern book dwelling is typical of homes built during this period and contributes to the historic district.

The house not on Canyon Road was built by Mrs. Ella Rogers Squires, a daughter of Thomas and Aurelia Rogers. Her mother was the founder of the Primary. Mrs. Squires lived in the house until 1905 when she moved to New York.

After she moved, Camilla C. Cobb moved into the house in 1908 and built the house in the front on Canyon Read. Mrs. Cobb, a native of Germany, came to Utah with Karl G. Maeser, her brother-in-law. She married James T. Cobb in 1864. She is credited with starting the first kindergarten in Salt Lake. She was also president of the Ensign Stake Primary.

This one and one-half story house is from a house pattern book. It has
fish scale shingles on the gable ends and the dormer. The picture windows are flanked by narrow operables on both floors. The house is typical of the period.

This house which was built in 1906 is typical of the house pattern book
“box style” and has some Victorian characteristics. Walter C. Squires, the owner, was a barber in Salt Lake City. He worked with other members of his family and had shops in downtown Salt Lake and in the Templeton Building.

Ezra O. Best, the contractor, lived in the area on 4th Avenue and built a
number of houses on the Avenues and in the City Creek area.

This two story brick house is similar to the house pattern book “box
style” and some Victorian feeling. The square pierced porch has probably been added but it is compatible. There are square and segmented bays and large windows There is a scarcity of wood trim. The roof is hipped.

This 1901 vernacular bungalow is similar to houses built in Salt Lake and adds to the character of the historic district. The owner, Ezra O. Taylor, was a dentist in Salt Lake City.

Ezra O. Taylor was a son of John Taylor, the third president of the Mormon Church. He was born in Salt Lake City on May 20, 1863. After attending schools in Salt Lake, he graduated from the University of Utah and went to the New York University School of Dentistry. Fie received a dental degree in 1892. Taylor was a dentist in Salt Lake for over fifty years. For awhile he practiced with J. A. Clawson and J. H. Taylor.

As a member of the Mormon Church, Taylor served a mission to the Southern States, worked in the Sunday School and was a temple ordinance worker.

He married Ida Whipple June 26, 1895. They had six sons and daughters.
He died in 1952.

This one story brick vernacular bungalow has an eyebrow window on the roof. Originally, there was a round columned porch and railways. The roof is hipped.

Preservation Utah‘s pamphlet from the 53rd Annual Historic Homes Tour of the City Creek Canyon Historic District on May 18, 2024 said this about the home:

The bungalow is perhaps the most popular house type in Utah architectural history. Its simplicity and ease of construction enhanced its popularity in the early 20th century as Salt Lake’s population boomed. This particular bungalow was built for Ezra and Ida Taylor who lived in the house until 1921 when their family of seven had probably outgrown it. It was then purchased by Elias and Luella Kimball, who moved in with their two daughters. In the early 1930s, the Kimballs converted the basement to an apartment, although family members continued to occupy the main floor until the early 1960s. Although it is a bungalow, its features are somewhat uncharacteristic of this house type. The porch, for example, extends along the east side of the house rather than along the front. Consequently, the house is distinctly asymmetrical-rather than symmetrical-with a projecting bay on the front. The columns along the porch are Classical reference, perhaps to provide an air of dignity. The house’s most distinctive feature is its “eyebrow” window, which brought light into the attic.

This 1903 pioneer vernacular house has been altered a great deal, but it
still adds somewhat to the character of the district. The owner, Samuel George Spencer, was a businessman in Pleasant Grove and Salt Lake City. His popcorn was sold at all of the Salt Lake resorts.

Spencer grew up in Pleasant Grove. In 1903 he moved to Salt Lake City where he was the foreman of the Salt Lake Knitting Works and manager of the Ensign Knitting Company. He later opened a small grocery store on State Street and then moved the business next to this house. He started making popcorn in 1904 and he had a small factory behind his store. He built and rented small apartments later in his life.

Spencer, a member of the LDS Church, wrote pamphlets and was president of the Northern State Mission from 1895-1896.

Spencer was a polygamist and had four wives. After he married his fourth wife, his third wife, Elizabeth Cable Spencer, lived in this house.

A one story house with a combination gable and hip roof. Some of the
windows are intact but the rest of the house has been altered a great deal.
The additions and alternations are insensitive to the house.

Three story apartment building.

This apartment building was constructed by the Squires. Mary N. Squires, Walter C. Squires’ widow lived here for a few years.

This 1927 three story brick apartment building contributes to the character of the district.

Located at 146 4th Avenue in the City Creek Canyon Historic District of Salt Lake City, Utah. Because of the recent construction date (1969), this is not contributory to the historic district.

This 1903 vernacular cottage is typical of some of the snail houses built in Salt Lake at the turn of the century and contributes to the character of the district.

Walter T. Pyper, a Salt Lake City businessman, worked for Utah-Idaho Sugar Company. Pyper, the son of Alexander and Christina Dollinger Pyper, was born on August 3, 1876. He married Delia Tergensen in 1903 and after her death, he married Marie Sorensen.

Pyper attended the Utah State Agricultural College in Logan. He was then hired by Horace G. Whitney to work for Utah-Idaho Sugar. He was the assistant secretary and treasurer for that company.

In 1913, Pyper moved to a new house on A Street.

A vernacular cottage with original columned porch and railing with turned balusters intacted. Hipped roof, one story house.

This 1916 house follows the style of the pattern books. It has been altered
