inUtah Woolen Mills
See the Store History here.
Utah Woolen Mills was established in 1905 and has been in the same family ever since.
Henry and Bryant Stringham picked things up in 1905 and focused on the mill and taking UWM nation wide. At one point there were over 450 traveling salesmen and women traveling all over the country selling UWM’s goods.
Bry Jr. Stringham – Bryant’s son was next to take the reigns and focused on the retail side of things. Keeping Salt Lake’s downtown as home base, he began the retail store and tailoring shop that specialized in custom clothing.
Bart Stringham, current Chairman and Bry’s son – took the retail shop to the next level introducing brands like Brioni and Oxxford to Utah. His dream was to put UWM on the map as a premier clothing store. With quality being the upmost important, he had never deviated from that.
J Stringham (President) & Brandon Stringham (CFO) – have continued to build on what Bart built – taking things to an even higher level of prestige. Bringing brands like Kiton, Isaia, Eton among others and being nationally recognized as one of the best stores in the country. BJ and Brandon search the world over to find the best that money can buy and hands can make. Luxury, beauty and style is what they are determined to bring to Salt Lake City
Utah Woolen Mills is a unique place where you will be remembered and cherished as a customer and friend. Not many stores in the country have 3rd or 4th generation customers. We are proud of our past and look forward to the future!

inThorsby, Alabama
Thorsby is a small Central Alabama town located in Chilton County. Thorsby was first settled in 1895 and incorporated in 1901 by Scandinavian immigrants who had originally settled in the midwestern United States, but who were seeking a milder climate and fertile soil for growing food. One of those earliest settlers was Theodore T. Thorson, for whom the town was eventually named (the suffix “by” meaning “settlement” in Scandinavian languages). The town grew quickly, with two hotels, a sawmill and lumber company, and two wineries being built within the first couple of years. The town of Thorsby was declared a promised land for northerners looking to relocate to a warmer climate, suitable for farming and better health. The fertile soil of the South produced grapes in large numbers, along with other fruits such as strawberries, and the peaches for which Chilton County is famous. The founders formed the Concordia Land and Improvement Association and began advertising in New England newspapers about the “utopia” they had discovered in the Southeastern United States. Many traveled by railroad to purchase a tract of land and start a better life. Thorsby became affectionately known as the little “Swede town” by locals.*

inHollywood Apartments
Built in 1909, this imposing 31-unit apartment building, notable for its construction of rusticated and decorative ashlar concrete block, is the only remaining example of its type in Salt Lake City. All of the apartments have built-in Murphy beds, oak built-in cabinets typical of Mission style, and hardwood trim. The 1995 restoration of the building into an apartment condominium community has left many of these original interior features intact.
These apartments were constructed by John M. Wilfrey who lived in Salt Lake City between 1903-10. He developed several real estate projects in the city during that time, including the Wilfrey Apartments (now demolished). The Hollywood apartments are significant in representing an important housing option that emerged in response to Salt Lake City’s rapid urbanization between 1890 and the 1930s.

inLincoln Arms Apartments
Apartments such as this were a new type of residential building that emerged during the early 20th century as Salt Lake City developed into an urban center. Dozens of multi-story brick apartments were constructed in the neighborhoods near downtown. They were attractive investments for property owners and practical, “modern” housing for those who wished to live in the central city rather than in the suburbs. The Lincoln Arms Apartments were constructed in 1924-25 at a cost of $42,000. Original owners were Myrtle and Phillip Bratt. Mr. Bratt, a local contractor, was also the builder.
