Brigham Young Academy Women’s Gym

This building, constructed after 1912, was constructed under the leadership of BYU President Brimhall after obtaining a church appropriation for construction of a large gymnasium-dance hall on the west side of University Avenue across the street from the Brigham Young Academy main campus. Women’s physical education activities were relocated there, and it was named the Ladies Gymnasium. In the early 1930s the name was changed to the Women’s Gymnasium.

Ducks and Turtles!

We like to stop at the BYU duck pond, there are always plenty of ducks and turtles to watch and often baby ducklings too, I don’t know if there are cuter things than ducklings and turtles. It’s funny to watch the turtles fight over the rocks in the water and knock each other down into the pond.

This is a great and fun place to bring the kids and take some photos. A really great spot to visit if you’re in Provo.

The Betrand F. Harrison Arboretum and Botany Pond is named in honor of the legendary professor who taught botany for 43 years and made it possible for BYU campus to house some 900 species of trees indigenous to all over the United States. Because of the sustained efforts of the Grounds Department, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has given BYU a regional water conservation award. The university has also been cited for excellence by the America in Bloom Organization.

Philo Edwards House

Philo Edwards House

Built circa 1929 by the Loveless family, this four room Craftsman style home had a large front porch and featured four rooms under a squared roof. It was purchased about 1931 by Philo Edwards. Mr. Edwards did some remodeling and additions including adding more rooms and changing the outside to Colonial Revival styling. Surrounding the home were acres of raspberries, and fruit trees.
The Edward’s family included 14 children, either by birth or adoption, however no more than 12 ever lived in the home at one time. One of those children was National College Football Hall of Fame member and former Brigham Young University football coach LaVell Edwards. This was his boyhood home and he attended school and graduated from Lincoln High School while living in this home. In the fall of 2008 it provided a back drop for a portion of a one-hour television life sketch on LaVell. The show aired on the Mountain West television station during the football season. LaVell’s father Philo was notable in his own right. For more than 25 years he served as the LDS Stake President of the area and hosted many Apostles and leaders of the LDS Church in his home.
