Bishops Storehouses, Historic Buildings, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Sugar House, Telephone, Telephone Companies, utah

Standing out in the residential area of the Sugar House neighborhood is the Hyland Exchange Building, built in 1911 for the Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph Company for their phone operators it served that purpose until the 1940’s when automated phone dialing became possible.

In 1949 the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints purchased it to be the Sugar House Bishop’s Storehouse and they manufactured shoes and did other sewing there as well.

When the building was built it was out on the edge of town but as the neighborhood grew it soon became almost considered downtown.

Bishops Storehouses, Draper, Historic Buildings, Salt Lake County, utah

Located in the backyard of the Willard Boulter Enniss Home in Draper, Utah, this building was the Bishop’s Storehouse at least for the time that W.B. Enniss was the local bishop. His signature can still be seen on the lumber inside.

There are many historic bishop’s storehouses and tithing offices, see these pages for more:

Bishops Storehouses, Historic Buildings

Doing any exploring around Utah, Arizona, Idaho and more you’ll probably see some old Bishop’s Storehouse buildings. The members of the LDS Church donate 10% of their income to the church and back in pioneer days instead of money it was often animals, food or whatever they do for a living.

Most Mormon settlements had a Bishops Storehouse, often I can tell that is what they used to be just by seeing them.

This page is to document those I have come across.

  • Draper
  • Ephraim
  • Fairview
  • Fountain Green
  • Lindon
  • Manti
  • Parowan
  • Sugar House Salt Lake

Many bishop’s storehouses were also tithing offices, my list of tithing offices can be seen here:
