The Utah War – U.S. Army Sent West

In May of 1857, President James Buchannan ordered a United States Army of 2,500 men to march to Utah. The army was commanded by Colonel Albert Sidney Johnston. His assignment was to quell reported difficulties between appointed government officials and Brigham Young, governor of the territory. The following spring, 500 additional soldiers were sent to join Colonel Johnston, giving him an army of 3,000 men to confront the Utah Militia. Sending the U.S. Army out west was a result of falsehoods concerning the conditions in Utah, lack of communication, and politics. Accompanying the army was Alfred Cumming, who had been appointed to replace Brigham Young as governor.

City Cemetery
1884

The first child born in Park City was also the first child to die here. George and Rhoda Snyder, who are credited with christening the town Park City, operated a boarding house here when the area was just a mining camp. When their infant daughter Pearl succumbed during a heavy snowstorm, attempts to take her to Salt Lake City for burial were thwarted by snow drifts. Thus she was buried on this property owned by the Snyders, who donated the 40 acre parcel to the City in 1879 to be used as a cemetery.

In March, 1881 the Park Record newspaper sponsored a dance to raise funds for a picket fence to surround the cemetery. The handsome wrought iron fence with stone pilasters was erected in 1983.

Although several Chinese were buried here, all were exhumed to be shipped to China for reburial, as was the Chinese custom.

Early tombstones indicate an unusually high number of young children’s graves, testifying to the ravaging effects of disease, severe winters, and hardships of life in early Park City.

The text above is from a plaque at the entrance to the the Park City City Cemetery presented by the Park City Centennial Commission in 1984.

Hoosier Pass elevation 11,542 ft is a high mountain pass in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado in the United States. A share of the pioneer settlers being natives of Indiana, the “Hoosier State” caused the name to be selected.

The pass is located on the Continental Divide at the northern end of the Mosquito Range, in a gap between Mount Lincoln (west) and Hoosier Ridge (east). It sits on the boundary between Park (south) and Summit (north) counties.

Wanship was founded in 1859 by Stephen Nixon and Henry Roper, who were joined by other settlers over the next two years. In 1861, 300 Native Americans settled in the area. The sudden population increase made attempting to gather food in the area difficult. A friendly Ute, Chief Wanship, helped the non-native settlers to find game, locate edible plants, and trade with the Indians. In return, the town was named for him. Farming in the area included rye, barley, wheat, and alfalfa. The town also served as a local commodity hub, as coal from Coalville, silver from Park City, and lumber from Kamas passed through. In 1862 an overland stage stop, called the Kimballs Stage Station, opened in Wanship.  Due to its central location, Wanship became the first county seat of Summit County, from the formation of the county government in 1866 until Coalville became county seat in 1872.

The first two-story home built by Thomas Albert Smith, in Summit County was built in Wanship, and has since been relocated to Pioneer Village in Lagoon Amusement Park.
