Hansen Dairy

In 1871 the Brigham City Mercantile and Manufacturing Association built a dairy near this location in Cottonwood Hollow. The large 2 ½ story structure was built from locally quarried stone and represented the Dairy Department of the religious cooperative established by Mormon Apostle Lorenzo Snow.

The dairy was run by Christian and Elizabeth Hansen, who had immigrated from Denmark in 1854. Elizabeth was widely acknowledged as an expert cheese maker and had responsibility for all of the products created here.

Members of the cooperative were invited to loan cows to the dairy in early spring. Every fall, the cows, along with a share of the cheese and butter their milk had produced, were returned to them.

A devastating fire at the co-op’s woolen factory in 1877 followed by an onerous federal tax assessment in 1879 sent the cooperative into receivership. Christian and Elizabeth Hansen purchased the dairy farm from the cooperative and ran it successfully until 1893.

One of their sons, Willard Snow Hansen, continued the dairy operations for a time before transitioning into sheep ranching. Their other son, Lorenzo Hansen, founded the Cache Valley Condensed Milk Company, which for decades produced evaporated milk, cheese, and butter at six creameries in Utah and Idaho.

This monument was erected in Beaver Dam, Utah by descendants of Christian Hansen in June of 2013 and is #186 of the Sons of Utah Pioneers historic markers.

The Old Spanish Trail
1829-1848

The Old Spanish Trail, the main trade route between Santa Fe and Los Angeles, passed this way beginning in 1829. At the end of the Mexican-American War this portion of the route evolved into what was variously known as the Salt Lake Road, the Mormon Trail, the California Road, and eventually U.S. Highway 91. The original pack trail descended Utah Hill, passed through Beaver Dam, then followed the Virgin River toward Las Vegas. As wagon traffic increased in the 1850s the route veered westward near today’s Utah-Arizona border to avoid the river gorge.

In January, 2005 a major flood roared through this valley destroying thirty homes and causing massive property damage.

There are many markers about the Old Spanish Trail, see this page for others. This one is located in Beaver Dam, Arizona and was dedicated March 19, 2005 by the Matt Warner 1900, Billy Holcomb 1069 and Queho Posse 1919 chapters of the ancient and honorable order of E Clampus Vitus.

The Box Elder Cooperative Association was established in 1867-68 by Lorenzo Snow, under direction of Brigham Young. In 1871 a dairy, said to be the first in Utah, was built south of Beaver Dam, near a cold water spring. Christian Hansen, operator. From 600 cows, some butter and 50,000 pounds of cheese was produced yearly. The co-op closed in 1878 and Mr. Hansen purchased the dairy. His son, Willard, bought and operated it until 1893.

Beaver Dam is an unincorporated community in Box Elder County, Utah, United States.

Beaver Dam was settled in 1867 by people from Providence and Deweyville, and named for the numerous beaver dams along nearby Willow Creek.

In 1868, the first co-op dairy in Utah was established there.

Jim Bridger, the famous mountain man, has been given credit for being the first white man to enter the Bear River Valley.  Whether he came down the river on a boat or entered from Cache Valley on horseback, he no doubt passed through Beaver Dam.  In August and September of 1843, the famous explorer John C. Fremont also traveled through the Beaver Dam area.  The Mormons were the next to arrive, driving cattle through the easy oasis in the hills to the lush pasture land of Cache Valley.

The first permanent settlers of Beaver Dam came in 1867 or 1868.  Early settlers came to the area from Providence in Cache Valley to engage in stock raising.  They enclosed a small field containing about 72 acres located just north of the present day Beaver Ward Chapel and proceeded to make a ditch in which to carry water to their land for irrigation purposes.  The settlement was known as Beaver Dam because of the numerous and sizable beaver dams built in the small creek that passes through the area.  The Brigham City Cooperative Dairy was established above Beaver Dam about this time and was also an influence in attracting settlers to this area.

In the 1880’s the people of Beaver Dam found that the surrounding hillsides and rolling valleys could be used for dry farming.  This new industry brought more settlers. In 1881 Jarvis Johnson moved from Brigham City and was  influential in building in the area.

In 1898 the residents of Beaver Dam erected a very commodius Church building.  Much of the actual cash for the building was paid by the Hansen family, and many ward members paid their share toward the building by plowing and doing other work for the Hansens up by the dairy.  Though remodeled two major times since then, this same church building is being used by the Beaver Ward today.

An unfortunate incident in the history of the town was the installation of a pumping plant to draw water up to irrigate 500 acres of land north of town.  The project cost many thousands of dollars, but later proved to be too expensive and unsuccessful.

In recent years agriculture has become less important to the Beaver Dam economy.  Its beautiful location in a somewhat secluded valley close to both Tremonton and Logan have made it a desirable location.  In 1996 the citizens of the Beaver Dam and Collinston area had the area zoned to help preserve its open pastoral setting.(*)

There isn’t much out in this area unless you’re a geocacher, and if you are there is a lot. There is a series of caches hidden in locations so that if viewed on a map they’ll look like a kokopelli blowing his flute. There’s another series in the shape of a star nearby as well.

Kokopelli in the desert

I’ve personally hiked the star, and a small part of the kokopelli, I plan on going back to finish it.

Here’s a few hiking photos from out there.
