I’m a big fan of the ghost signs, the old murals on the sides of old buildings that are fading away. One recurring ghost sign I see around Utah is an ad for Mountaineer Overalls.
I heard from relentlesshistory that they were produced by ZCMI in the 1800s.
I wanted to start a collection of those on this page.

In my exploring I often come across cool ghost signs (old murals/ads that are fading away).
One of the recurring signs I see if for Henry George 5¢ Cigars.
When I see something coming up again and again I like to create its own page on my website for it, so this page will be for collecting the Henry George Cigar Murals I find.
I haven’t found any real history on the Henry George cigars yet.

Ghost signs are old ads and murals that were painted (usually onto the sides of buildings) and are fading away now. I have always loved them and decided to start a little collection of those that I come across.

Some history from Mary Monroe Shumway:
This garage was owned by a man named Ken Olsen. He ran the gas station and was a mechanic. Next door to the service station was a café which the family ran as well and the family lived in the back and there was an upstairs. The highway (Hwy 91) ran through Scipio until about 1959 so there were a number of gas stations, restaurants, and grocery stores in a little town. Scipio also had a large hotel. Highway 91 was the highway between Nephi and Fillmore. In 1959 they moved the highway and it then ran south of town where I-15 is now. From about 1930 – 1960 Scipio saw a lot of travelers. People would also go to Highway 89 from Scipio. In about 1945 Scipio also had about 700 people living there and by about 1960 there were about 350.
Ken Olsen’s daughter Virga married Irvin Monroe. The station and café were later were owned by Irvin and Virga Monroe and their sons Jack, Neil and Dix. When I grew up they used the garage to fix their farm equipment and the gas pumps to provide fuel for farm equipment. So it hasn’t been operational for quite sometime.

Erected in 1893 and opened under the name of Ericksen Meat and Grocery, this building was owned by Henry Ericksen, his brother Alif, and Judge Ferdinand Ericksen. Ferdinand Ericksen was a lawyer and occupied three rooms on the second floor for his law practice. The town doctor, Dr. W.W. Woodring, occupied the other two rooms on the second floor. The building remained in possession of the Ericksen family until 1976.
