I have an older barn than the Seely barn, built in the summer of 1862 by Christopher Dixon and his family shortly after their arrival in Payson, Utah. The barn is at 340 West 400 North in Payson. The house on that property also was built in 1862. The property has been in the family since it was originally settled. Seven generations of my family have lived there.
But these aren’t the oldest buildings in town. They are the third oldest. The William Wignall house at 298 North 100 East and the Orwell Simons 2nd house at 165 South Main Street in Payson were both built in 1857. Orwell Simons 1st house, built in 1852, stood until a few years ago at 251 North Main Street. It was made of local undressed stones and was the oldest structure in town and the first non-log house in town.
That is so interesting! Thank you. I have a little on the Dixon home here: https://jacobbarlow.com/2020/06/25/christopher-flintoff-dixon-sr-home/ but that’s great to learn more. I’ll add the info about the barn there.
